Description
Torn from Darkness works by Felix Lembersky, a 72-page art full-color art catalogue; 22 reproductions of Felix Lembersky's paintings and drawings; essays by Galina Lembersky, artist's daughter, Joe Troncale, Alison Hilton, and Lourdes Figueroa. Works include Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52), the earlist-known artistic representation of the Holocaust site near Kyiv, Crucifixion (1964), A Woman in The Siege of Leningrad (Lezhashchaya, Reclining, 1964), and others. Felix Lembersky was a Soviet artist of Jewish descent who worked in Ukraine and Russia. He participated in Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine in the 1920s and '30s; studied at Jewish Kultur-Lige and Kyiv Art Institute (Ukrainian National Academy of Art). After moving to Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg) in 1935, he studied at the Academy of Art, taught, and joined LOSKh. After a brief realist period, he returned to non-realist, expressionist forms and became a vocal opponent of Socialist Realism and the official Soviet art establishment. Catalogue includes chronology and the list of selected exhibitions, publications, and symposia compiled by Yelena Lembersky. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the University of Richmond Museums, Virginia, Sept. 25 - Dec. 2, 2012
